Google Photos is a free, unlimited home for your lifetime of photos. I just love browsing and searching my photos, but sometimes I want more. On any given photo I might want to know the date it was taken, the location, the camera used to take it, and any comments/description I’ve written about it.

Easily Done, just Swipe up.
These instructions are for mobile devices. On the computer/web version of Google Photos, you can see the same info by clicking on the ⓘ. It is becoming quite common to “swipe up for more” on all sorts of apps. I really like it. Once you know it’s there, it becomes second nature quickly.
The map shows up a ways down, just scroll to see it. If there is no map it may be that your phone’s camera settings are not recording the location. Here’s how to check on that:
- iPhone: Settings, Privacy, Location Services On, scroll down to Camera: While Using
- Android: On most Androids, you open the camera app and tap the gear button ⚙️ for settings. Look for a setting like Location Tags, or GeoTags.
The Map View
When you swipe up on a photo and see a map, it shows you the location. This location is where that one photo was taken. What if you wanted to find other photos taken in that same location? Just tap right on the map and you’ll see the map view of Google Photos.

You can also go directly to Google Photos’ Map View by tapping on the Collections tab and Places. Note: this is only available on mobile devices. There is no Map View of all photos on the web.
